Children cycling and walking to school in the sun.

The Sustrans Active School Travel Programme is an exciting initiative for schools who wish to see more of their children choosing an active journey to school. Increasing the number of children who regularly walk, cycle or scoot to school has a number of benefits including increased physical activity levels amongst young people, reduced congestion around schools and increased road safety awareness.

Sustrans is being funded by the Department for Regional Development and the Public Health Agency to deliver a three year Active School Travel programme across Northern Ireland. We are now recruiting schools for Year 2 of the programme which will begin in September 2014 and will continue for two years to June 2016.

This initiative provides the school with a planned programme of activities throughout the year, both in and out of the classroom, and direct hands-on delivery from a dedicated Sustrans Active Travel Officer, with the aim of getting more children walking, cycling and scooting as their main mode of transport to school.

Every primary and post primary school in Northern Ireland has been posted a letter of invitation and a questionnaire to complete. The information provided in the questionnaire will be scored and used to help select schools for involvement in the programme. The questionnaire is also available to download and complete digitally from

Please understand we are aiming to work with geographical clusters of schools to maximise our Active Travel Officers’ time in schools and to minimise travel time. To increase the possibility of a Sustrans Active Travel Officer being allocated to your area, please encourage your neighbouring schools to join you and complete the questionnaire as well.

Interested schools must complete the questionnaire and return to Sustrans by Wednesday, 9th April.
